Unfortunately, Valve only returns items if the account was hijacked or otherwise. Since Valve do not recommend trading items for real world currency, they will not return your items.
Sorry for your loss, next time if someone says don't use a Middleman, cancel the trade.

To always find a real middleman, go to the Steam rep middlemen list here and copy paste the Steam ID directly into the Steam Client, IDs are unique and people can't forge them.
