    Description:
I have been getting more and more reports of people renaming stock weapons to make them tradable and claiming that they are rare to some unsuspected newbies. Upon asking one of these sellers myself, he tries to claim that there's only 3 of these available with a price of a buds. This is highly unethical and I do not tolerate these kind of behaviour.

Thanks for the report, he will most likely be marked as soon as an Admin sees this.
On another note, they seem to be getting smarter, someone once tried to scam me with a wrench renamed "Golden Wrench". At first I thought they were just being stupid then I saw they had described it as "Imbued with ancient power (Not Tradeable)". ಠ_ಠ

Burner made a honest mistake about items and was told it had more value than it did. He should not be listed as a scammer because someone else scammed him in a trade and he was relaying information that was given to him. Nothing was traded, and he has now been linked to the spreadsheet so he can tell actual values of items. I have traded with Burner for nearly a year now and at no point was he anything but very honest and trustoworthy. This is not a golden wrench scam, just a guy trying to trade an item.

Burner is in NO WAY a scammer. There should be some kind of system that protects people from this sort of false accusation! IF ANYTHING, he could be accused of being a tough trader looking for a good deal, like ALL good traders, but when he is given information about a certain item that it might be rarer than it is, and thinks he can get a good deal for it, why shouldn't he try? Nothing was traded and from what i can see in the screenshot does not seem excessively SCAM LIKE, especially considering he thought it was a RARE item! Now Burner has a Black spot against his name for hardly any reason AT all. REALLY ? Waste of time.

I've banned many people at UHC/UTC for the type of scam being accused here.

However, I suggest a 90-day (or 30/60/whatever the standard is these days) Caution tag be applied here.

I've been acquainted with Burner for a year or so, so I may be biased, but from my experience, much of what happened would be pretty ridiculous for anyone trying to scam people to do.

The story is he got the item while scrapbanking, asked his friend how much it was worth (didn't know), then asked the server how much it was worth, and got trolled (both in being told it's value and with someone calling out an offer of 4 keys, which only reinforced what the server had said). HAK was the first (and only) person to send him a trade request for it.

The only knock against him (that I see), is that his basis for saying "there's only 3 of them" was that he had only found 2 other people on the server with them. For that, he deserves a caution tag -- you can't exaggerate values -- he could've actually hurt someone doing that -- but it doesn't seem like he was out parading around trying to scam anyone, so I suggest letting him have a chance to redeem himself.

To the admin addressing this case: please add me for further discussion.

PS. @Whippy, don't confuse "getting a good deal" with sharking or lying about item values. There's no such thing as a "good trader" who lies about item values to make a trade.

I know very little about the incident in question, since I was not there and have seen no logs.

I will comment on HAK however, he is like me a Gamers UN Admin and has assisted me in nailing a few fake middle-man injection scams, as well as providing research while investigating other scammers and SR tagged traders on our servers.

He is a person who's integrity and passion for advocating fair dealing with trades is something I admir, and he was selected as Admin for this reason.

I personally take a dim view of all the types of incidents which grace the pages of Steamrep, and am glad there is a focul point to bring the less scrupulous in TF2 ranks to public attention.

I recall I have seen Burner about, however I do not recall ever seeing anything untoward from this person, that being said, I have no first hand knowledge of this "wrench" thing. If HAK had any reason to call him to account, then I stand by anything he may have said at the time.

I have not lodged an all out war to get Burner kicked out of GU via reporting to my superior, I may have been aggressive in words after I questioned him, this is due to a follow up of a very similar incident involving a re-named PDA and clearly was an attempted scam on one of our regular traders.
http://steamcommunity.com/id/jelly20/ <- has a renamed PDA, removed the tag to make it look like a rare tradable item, had refused to accept my friend invitation.

In saying that, I was hoping that Burner would want to come clean by NOT cancelling the trade when I said I got him, and instead start explaining where the source of his price check came from. This is the chatlog of him during the time that I questioned him,

    http://gamersun-au.gameme.com/player_histories/chat/76244

The weapon was advertised in main chat under this timeline - 3 May 2012 01:42:14

After he cancelled our trade window, he still wants to claim of its rarity. I had honestly hope he would add me up to discuss right after this happened but he did not, and instead has asked a couple of other guys to talk with me instead. It's all good to have a healthy discussion but the information that I'm getting from chat and from here, is a bit confusing.

IkebotXP adds me up stating that Burner had asked for a price check of this item in our own server a few minutes before I traded him (this is what IkebotXP was told by Burner), I have checked all of Burner's chat logs and there was no such thing happening during that time.

The story provided by schwegs here has more solidity in it, but, the question is, which server exactly? price check was given by whom and which culprit has relayed this fake information and even manage to convince Burner that it is worth a buds with only 3 in existence. And why is Burner telling a different story to IkebotXP on, price checking in GU server minutes before I questioned him?

A trader is allowed to price his items however he/she wants. It is not up to SR to discuss values and the likes.

This is a misunderstanding and should be addressed as such.

This differs from a scam because he was mislead as to what the item was worth. He did not purposely misrepresent the value of the item or rename it to seem like it's anything it's not.
