Sometimes people add me. Today, this guy, (gregnolan) added me and when he got online he tried to buy my Unusuals for Money. I asked him to turn the money into buds but he said no. Already I was very suspicious, before I did the trade.. I checked his Steam profile and it was private, so I played around a bit with him. But the weird thing is.. he doesn't have an Outpost.. Meaning this is an ALT. Chat: Code: gregnolan: hello, sell items for money? Ken - #Sleep: Can you turn the money into buds? gregnolan: no Ken - #Sleep: Hmm. Ken - #Sleep: How much and what items you want? Ken - #Sleep: I do sell my Unusuals for money of course. gregnolan: yeah unusuals Ken - #Sleep: Oh kay. Ken - #Sleep: What Unusuals you want? gregnolan: 2 unusuals gregnolan: for 145$ Ken - #Sleep: 6 x 30 = 240$ Ken - #Sleep: Can you do 240 dollars for both? gregnolan: hm gregnolan: we can use your friend or middleman? Ken - #Sleep: Which middleman Ken - #Sleep: are you thinking of? gregnolan: u choose Ken - #Sleep: No, you can choose. gregnolan: i dont know him gregnolan: maybe your friend Ken - #Sleep: Whi? Ken - #Sleep: Who? gregnolan: u choose Ken - #Sleep: Man, I don't really trust my friends. Ken - #Sleep: You can choose. gregnolan: who>? Ken - #Sleep: Anyone. gregnolan: lolwat Ken - #Sleep: ANYWAYS! Ken - #Sleep: Welcome to Steamrep! Ken - #Sleep: Woops. Ken - #Sleep: Sorry wrong chat. Ken - #Sleep: Someone else is trying to scam me. Ken - #Sleep: XD. Ken - #Sleep: This noob that's trying to scam me. Ken - #Sleep: Anyways, so..? Ken - #Sleep: Have you figured out a MM? Ken - #Sleep: Well, I am screening this chat right now..
This guy added me and offered me the same thing. The strange part was that he said I could choose the middleman, and told me to go friend him and add him to chat, basically eliminating the chance of him imperonating him. He also reccomended using Moneypak which, according to my understanding, makes it impossible to charge back? It's definetly very suspicious but not sure if he's really a scammer or whatever, not actual proof of malicious intent. But also seeing as he offered 1050$ for a few of my Unusuals worth only 600$ was suspicious.
Well, seeing that this is in fact an ALT. I'm SURE that he is a scammer. There are new ways of scams everyday, maybe he found a new way. Maybe he bribes the MM, even though he/she is your friend saying HALF OF THIS SCAM GOES TO YOU
I don't see definitive evidence of a scam attempt. However, This is not a new scam type. If a scam were to take place, it would likely be of the fake middleman injection variety. In essence, the scammer uses an alt account to impersonate the middleman at bare minimum in name and avatar. The real middleman is brought into the conversation, then as the trade is supposed to happen, the scammer uses the alt account to trade the user, claiming to be the middleman. After the trade occurs, both the fake middleman and scammer run off with the stolen goods. It is because of this, that a good middleman will NEVER trade the seller. This gives an opportunity for the seller to verify that the middleman is indeed the actual middleman for the trade. That being said however, There isn't enough to warrant a scammer tag.
