I have always made a point of reporting free steam game phishing attempts on steam chat using the report abuse option on their user profile to Valve.

I have reported quite a number over the years and I was wondering the correct way of doing this. I always give the date and pasted what they said exactly including any url they give.

What Im worried about is that Valve may take my reports with these urls as attempts by me at phishing.

I would appreciate words of encouragement or examples of what you guys do. Thanks.

I would imagine Valve are smart enough to not be clicking links you expressly report as "phishing" links...

You could always edit them "blah dot com" etc if you are really worried :)

The "report" on a profile is mainly a "stats" thing to valve, its encouraged by Valve to people to use it at times ppl ask them bout it. It is looked at if pointed to specific stuff (like reporting porn screenshots etc). And its in those cases often faster responded to then a Support ticket. Unfortunately with less tangible stuff it won't work (Scamming / cheating etc).

The way I prevent to "phish" is by making it a screenshot, link it in the text, saying that he was trying to phish, proof linked in screenshot. This makes it harder for the account holder to refute it as well. Also have a look at my sig.

Personally, I'd make both a User Misconduct ticket and a Steam support ticket. Both with proof, and saying in the steam support that you reported it as User misconduct as well.

It goes without saying that you should report <>< links here on SR also, Valve can take their sweet time, but SR can at least inform the community and tag as needed in a more timely manner. Only by spreading such info to the wider community can we help each other to keep the baddies under control :)

We run every now and then messages on top of SR about that yes, but there isn't much you can do really, nothing helps but a pair of brains.

I think Steam's team is smart enough to look at reports of those who repeatedly offended or tried to trick users. I once submitted a report on a user with a link to the file of the chatlog and screenshots. The thing is I made it only available to those who know what the link is.

Guess what? They checked it; the amount of downloads of the file actually went up from zero.

I don't think they would click them honestly, don't they have an email where you report them to dedicated to that?
