I checked the user against steam rep and it came up stating that the user had been previously banned by Valve (user is currently on Probation). In the back of my mind, I figured that the user had been banned on something like duping unusuals as most people are if they've been banned by Valve (although, some, like this one, went Grand Theft Auto on a few). I proceeded to buy the unusuals. I bought the NNB Madam Dixie and NNB Glengarry Bonnet not thinking twice about it because nothing seemed to be wrong. The user said he wasn't sure if he wanted to trade the other two and I respected that, not wishing to push the envelope. A day or so later, the user contacted me again as he was still on my friends list. He wished to sell the bubbles spartan now, and I bought it happily. Still, nothing was astray. We had friendly chit chat, he seemed to be an okay person and maybe just a child at that. *shrug* Today, however, it was slightly different. He contacted me wishing to sell the TF Logo drill as I seemed interested in it before and still was. I purchased the TF Logo drill then was then told what the screenshots will clearly show. In conclusion, the scammer self admitted it after I bought all the unusuals and I had no idea as the Valve Probation could have meant anything without further explanation on this site. I'm not quite sure what to do now as I'm afraid of a ban or probation on this site as well...
Would also like to point out that the Valve probation made me believe/assume the user didn't do something as bad as theft of unusuals as they were not banned on SteamRep as well, so I was somewhat unaware that they were banned due to what they self admitted to ex post facto. (Trying to provide evidence as to WHY I traded with them instead of full out blocking them.) Or, at least, I'm trying to point it out if I didn't really get it across before.
Can you state what you paid for these hats? Often a scammer will seek to sell them at very low prices, and that is usually a big red flag. Certainly caution should be taken trading with an account on probation, but you are correct that not all probations are for overly serious matters. The account is question is not SR tagged, and apart from few friends there are no obvious red flags for the casual observer. If you are genuine in your post, I highly doubt you have anything to worry about, and the fact you have posted here lends credibility to things. I am sure SR Staff will comment when they are free, can I just state that I hope this shows you the importance of performing due diligence when purchasing higher value items. Avoiding trades with scammers or suspect accounts is tricky, but by reading some of the helpful GUIDES here on SR, you should be able to avoid any situations that potentially put you in jeopardy. * Your screenshot may prove rather helpful I suspect, since the person admits to scamming.
You won't get in trouble with us for trading with someone with a caution or who is on probation. Please consider Banned by Valve tags to be just as serious as SR Scammer tags. In many cases, the person was just reported to Steam Support and not to us. Treat it as you would any other community scammer or caution tag. Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do here as he did admit to scamming but for all we know, that is why he received the tag from Valve. We can't tag him as all we have is him saying in chat that he scammed and no other evidence. However, I will keep an eye on him and thank him for the report.
Certainly. http://i.imgur.com/Jy7nfb1.png TF Logo Drill, 21 keys http://i.imgur.com/M7wHnjD.png Bubbles Spartan, 18 keys http://i.imgur.com/l7xUIZB.png NNB Glenngary, 11 keys. NNB Madam Dixie, 9 keys. My conclusion was that he was adamant on selling for under market price, but it wasn't like "ZOMG THIS IS HALF OFF HOLY CRAP MUST TAKE NOW" which lead me to believe that it was a normal quicksell. I've been able to purchase hats under market within similar ranges for similar prices under, which also lead me to believe there wasn't foul play.
Oh, seems Helen was one step ahead of me. Thank you for that note :] And thank you too, VenGanZa. I hope you both have wonderful days/evenings (and maybe something will come of my report *shrug* It's just in the past, I've seen people get in serious trouble for even joking around about scamming someone, so if the user was wholeheartedly admitting he scammed someone... *shrug*)
