It is quite possible he intended to scam you, just as it is quite possible he didn't.

The only thing your evidence shows is he wanted you to go first. Next time someone approaches you like this, tell them you insist on reputable MM, that will make a real scammer run for cover very fast.

Usually when they say that they want to have a "look" at the item first aka how it looks on them, thats usually a sign of a scammer trying to take a run for it, as you suggest it is best to contact a MM if value near buds is at stakes (or higher for that matter).
