Possible though captcha's aren't particularly difficult to get around for bots.

Just use common sense when getting friend requests. If someone adds you literally within seconds of you bumping a trade, it's clearly a bot.

The problem is that there are young people out there with little trade knowledge and common sense who fall for it so easily

And of course captcha's are not 100% both proof but if they are usless why does any site bother having them? They can stop the script kiddies from using their cheap bots atleast.

Captcha's are more a deterrent then a solution, it's also a bit for the users, to make them feel more "sure" about the site etc. that the owner of the site cares for real replies/responses etc. They also pose a problem to those that cannot see very well. Sites implement them ofter after a while, for then the spambots find their site, and have automated account creation on the site. By adding a captcha, they can stop/lower the problem for a while, till the bots know again about it, and enabled captcha checks and defeats. Every time the number of spam increases, they change the captcha, which will lower it then again due to that. Also, dependent on the Captcha the results vary. The easy captcha's are defeated easily, the hard ones give a lot of wrong inputs of real users.

Adding a captcha doesn't really work when you have already established users. That makes a site cumbersome. Also, users need to be able to check out other users on Dota2Lounge before they add somebody (be able to see the account, run a SR check, google the account, etc)
