What happened? Description:

I survived the early years of dota trade untouched by phishing and confidence scams but just fell hard to the tune of roughly $1800 US. Old, high ranked account with 450 games add me and owner immediately wants to talk on Discord. Nice fellow, says from northern Germany, but who knows--I don't speak German. Attached are discord caps and our full steam chat from today cut in as well. Basically, he walks me through his current technique for safe trading with real money. It goes like this:

1) We both establish screen sharing in Discord and show our Steam interfaces.
2) He logs off of Steam after showing me that he's deauthorizing all other devices via steamguard in his Steam settings.
3) I create the trade offer, confirming that he remains online and all the while I'm watching his Steam login and my Friends List to confirm that he's not online.
4) Upon seeing me (through screen share) complete the offer, he initiates BTC payment (or paypal or whatever i would have chosen)
5) In actuality, the trade seems to be auto-accepted. His account does not come back online but the trade is immediately completed and he cuts all coms and unfriends me immediately. (See caps from Discord etc.)

I was wary, despite him being very personable and seemingly trustworthy. I went first with a $60 item just to see that he had a BTC account and could initiate payment. He did so immediately. After that I was hooked.

So how did he accept a trade without his account being online? Some offline trade assistant plugin for a browser? Or he could toggle "appear as offline" without me seeing it and never actually went offline, using a dummy Steam Login applet to fake being offline?

Too high-tech for me. Got f*&$ed royally.​
