    Scam Report

Report Type: [Money] PayPal scam or scam attempt
Virtual item type involved: [DOTA2] Dota2 Items

    Accused profile: 76561198035418743

    Victim profile: 76561197972031966

    What happened? Description:
I found this guy from Dmarket trading. We have done two successful Dota2 item trades in the past, so I trusted him. But this time, he scammed me with a large amount of $260 and unfriended and changed his Steam name.

    Provide Evidence:
I found this guy from Dmarket trading. I was buying the Dota2 item “Crimson Censer of Gliss” via Dmarket’s F2F trading, and I searched for his name on the Steam community and added him as a friend. That was our first trade that went through the regulated Dmarket. I received my item via Dmarket. We became friends on 1/12/23. Since then, he offered me another Dota2 item, “Soul Diffuser” for $21. This payment was via Paypal. He actually sent me the item first before I sent him the $21. He had to wait several days for Paypal to release the fund, but everything was smooth, and I believed he was a decent guy.

Last week, this guy and I agreed that he would sell the Dota2 item “Golden Sullen Hollow” to me for $260. After waiting for the trade cool down, he sent me a money request on Paypal, and I instantly sent the full $260 to him. However, after sending him the money, Paypal again had his money on hold. He asked me to wait before he sends me the item. Although I had already paid in full, This guy tried to break this policy and wanted the money before he delivers. I was being absolutely kind to him and accommodated all his requests. Days passed, but he refused to send me the item even after he contacted Paypal to release the fund. I checked this morning I still haven’t gotten the item, and he has unfriended me on Steam. Not only that, he changed his Steam name. This guy was also constantly asking to “borrow” my other Dota2 items that are worth $500+ in which I had refused on multiple occasions. Today I filed an “item not received” dispute on Paypal.

Please see the “scammer proof” PDF attached for an easier-to-understand explanation of what transpired. Note that the images in the PDF are for reference only because have been compressed due to the 3MB file size restriction. I have also attached all the full screenshots sequentially zipped across 5 zip files.

Here is an uncompressed PDF and images if it helps.

I need the chat logs that show the formal agreement - I do not see that.

I thought this scammer was a "friend," so him selling me the “Golden Sullen Hollow” (golden necro) was communicated informally via Steam chat. There is nothing formal like a contract or terms. However, everything can be clearly interpreted throughout my conversation with him in various portions of the chat logs that I have. Unfortunately, when I suspected something was off with this guy (on 3/12), that was when I started going back to take screenshots. But Steam only stores chat history for a limited time, so the following is all I could obtain regarding the formal agreement. You can clearly read between the lines on what happened.

    1. In screenshot-01, he confirmed with me the price that we formally agreed on, which is $260. He also gave an update on when the trade could take place.
    2. In screenshot-02, he sent an update that the trade could take place the following day. He also confirmed that the item we formally agreed to trade is the golden necro.
    3. In screenshot-03, he notified me that the golden necro was tradable and sent me a Paypal money request.
    4. In screenshot-04, he confirmed that the money request was in the amount of $260, which was exactly the amount that we agreed upon. This further validates the agreement.
    5. In screenshot-05, he confirmed that I sent the money in full.
    6. In screenshot-06, he confirmed that he received the full amount of the money that I sent.
    7. In screenshot-07, he asked me to send him a steam offer for the gold necro, which he claimed he would accept later (this was on 3/12). On 3/13, I sent him the offer for the gold necro (as shown in screenshot-08).

After that, he never accepted the offer and unfriended me. Not to mention he made his profile private and changed his name.

    • EXACT name of an item for trade – we refer to the “Golden Sullen Hollow” as golden necro because this is the most expensive golden item for the Dota2 hero Necrophos (aka necro). Although we didn’t mention the full name in the chat log that I was able to go back to, we can evidently know the item for trade from the trade offer he initially sent me. In screenshot-09, he told me he sent a trade offer to give me the gold necro so I could play using it. The trade is shown in screenshot-10 where he gives me the Golden Sullen Hollow, but in return, he wants my “Axe of Phractos” that I never agreed on (See screenshot-11 for details). It can be confirmed from screenshot-08 and screenshot-10 that what we call golden necro is the Golden Sullen Hollow (see link).
    • Funding source – can be easily implied that it’s Paypal in the chat log.
    • Destination of funds – the seller (scammer) sent me the Paypal money request; therefore, we had a mutual agreement. He knows my Paypal account from the prior trade that we did.
    • The amount of funds – is clearly stated in the chat log and can be further confirmed via the Paypal money request sent by the seller.

I was going to decline this cause you are missing the formal agreement- still may have to (that is policy)
I'll give you 24hours to provide the formal agreement - IF you can find it on the getfriend message logs that will tie into what you have now I may accept that.

Do NOT provide any screenshots edited again - no more yellow squares drawn.

Thank you for your consideration because I already spent hours putting together what I have presented to you. I am very frustrated because I know policy is policy, and this is the first time I am filing a case on steamrep so I didn't know I had to have a formal agreement. I also never thought I would have gotten scammed.

Can you please be more explicit on which part of the above regarding the formal agreement was not acceptable to you so I can focus on that aspect? Also, what is getfriend message logs? The guy already deleted me so there's no more connection to him on Steam.

    Thanks

Nevermind on the getfriend message logs. I Googled it. Just which part of the formal agreement you need clarification on please. Thanks

I apologize about the yellow squares. I was trying to make things easier. I will not edit any screenshots again.

Due to time passed and a PM from the Op here I'm declining report for lack of evidence as in the Formal agreement.
Without that as it is critical to review we can't move forward.
