    Scam Report

Report Type: [Money] PayPal scam or scam attempt
Virtual item type involved: [DOTA2] Dota2 Items

    Accused profile: 76561198044988825

    Victim profile: 76561197962799352

    What happened? Description:
One week ago and even presently I was looking to upgrade my Karambit | Urban Masked (Field Tested). In my quest to do so I came across this trade on TF2 Outpost:

    http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/23019308

Looking at the item that was requested in exchange by ClutchBerry for his knife, it was up on the Market for $90, which is almost $100 less than what ClutchBerry's knife (Karambit | Stained [Battle Scarred]) was worth. This is suspicious, as who wouldn't trade a $90 DOTA 2 item for a $190 CSGO item?

Now, I never talked to the user who was (and may still be) trying to sell the DOTA 2 item linked in that trade for $90, but I am under the impression he, too, like Hippoman (ClutchBerry's accomplice) would have offered to trade me it for nearly anything worth remotely close to this contrived $90 value. This however cannot be proven, as I indeed never did talk to him. Though I am sure a curious party could investigate further in to how this user has 7 unusuals, and inquire in to the trade history of some of the newer ones, at the least. Notciably, too, both he and ClutchBerry went inactive at the same time on TF2 Outpost.

If you're curious who this user I mention is, you can see he posted on the same TF2 Outpost trade linked above. Here is his steamrep Info Block:

Anyway, onwards to the story of ClutchBerry and Hippoman. I contacted ClutchBerry yesterday for the first time, as he didn't add me until then despite me requesting him add me a week ago. I was suspicious from the beginning, but things got more and more suspicious as our discussion carried on. The first day talking to ClutchBerry I didn't talk to Hippoman, but I did talk to him today after talking to ClutchBerry a little bit, as can be seen in the two following chat logs with the two of them:

The last image in those series of images is proof that ClutchBerry and Hippoman had in fact been friends since September of 2013. If you go check that website now, however, you will see they readded eachother after I confronted them, making me have been "friends" with the either of them longer than they with one another.

Apparently I was not the first person to try and be scammed by Hippoman, nor most likely by ClutchBerry. Check here for another post involving Hippoman:

The type of scam may need to be reclassified. It had nothing to do with Paypal, I accidentally selected that from the list. I'm not sure what from that list this type of scamming is.

They both tried to persuade me to buy/trade for Hippoman's item one more time then removed me.

Just seeing this 2 years later, didn't know someone would have a reason to have a report against me. Anyway, I'm responding here because I don't see how this was a scam in any sense of the word. Here is the details of what happened here a couple of years ago to clear everything up.

I'll start off by saying that I did know Hippoman from playing Dota 2 with him when the game was fairly new, around the time it said we became friends at originally. At the time I also played CSGO and had a knife in the game but I was at the time considering to switch over to Dota so I didn't want the knife anymore. I'd play Dota games with Hippoman frequently and he showed me this expensive Dota 2 item that he had told me would be going up in price soon and said he would trade me it for my knife. After seeing it's value and taking into account that I wanted to get out of CS at the time, I agreed and told him I'd trade my knife for his item. While in the trade window he had a strange change of heart and declined the trade with me saying that he didn't like the look of my knife. Being that he seemed to be an inexperienced CSGO trader, I suppose he cared more about looks than value.

After that, I decided just to make a TF2outpost trade looking for that same Dota 2 item to trade my knife for. OP then added me and I most likely ignored his request because he didn't have that Dota 2 item in his inventory. He then added me again and said he would find a way to get Hippoman's item so I agreed and was happy that I might be finally getting that item. Before he did though, he checked to see how long we had been freinds for and saw that we were friend for a bit under a year. At this point I'll admit that I lied that we had just met because I knew he'd think something is up if he was dealing with two people who had been friends for a long time(which is fair).

Anyway, I guess that's where it ended. I'm not positive how this would be a scam on my end and that's why I'm making this appeal. If any further info is need, please let me know.

Having looked at the screenshots provided in this report, the behavior in question is highly indicative of a Glimmer Drop scam, as described in our Safe Trading Practices guide. I think you were right @∞ ∞ to not trade, as he would have likely run once you traded. Unfortunately, with the time passed, and no scam having completely been carried out, I cannot salvage enough evidence to issue a tag. That said, @*ClutchBerry* I would strongly advise you to keep your trading practices clean from here on out, and be careful who you work with. Without disclosing details, I found other unrelated but worrying traits on this "Hippoman" character you're long time friends with. Seeing no other reports against you for the same type of scam, I will archive this report, but you may not be so lucky the next time a report for this comes up.
