What happened? Description:

A user impersonating a trader known as Mr.Omani contacted me. He was already on my friends list before he changed his name to “Mr.Omani.” I don’t know why he was on my friends list, but I assume that we either traded or were going to trade sometime in the past. I always accept random friend requests (don’t ask why), and I never remove someone after trading with them. I don’t personally know who this person is, though, and I can’t recall trading—or even talking—with them. Maybe we never did.

As you can see, the impostor has a link to the real Mr.Omani’s inventory and Backpack.tf profile, while his actual inventory is private.

Right off the bat, I knew that this person was an impersonator (and probably a scammer) because I compared the link to “his” inventory to his profile, and the SteamID64s did not match. I was playing along and acting naive for the entire duration of the chats, and eventually, he gave me the link to a “Steam official” and told me to verify my items. That’s the oldest scam in the book, so I’m surprised that people still try to pull this s✿✿✿ off.

When I added “Matthew Rhoten,” the Valve employee impersonator, he told me to verify my items and eventually gave me a link to a trade offer with a user named “Item Database.” The trade URL was quickly changed after I unfriended and blocked “Matthew Rhoten,” so it no longer works.

I think the chat screenshots speak for themselves. The screenshots are not edited, but I didn’t include the Windows toolbar in them. I hope that’s fine. Other than that, the screenshots are unedited and cover my entire display.

The Mr.Omani impersonator is either the same person as the Matthew Rhoten impersonator, or they work together. They are probably the same person, however, especially since “Mr.Omani” said “i’ll (sic) leave you too to talk then.”
