What happened? Description:

I was contacted by a user from Reddit that saw I had Crimson Treasures opened and unopened (3 each) and was willing to sell them. It came from one of two comments I made in the /r/TI8_Vancouver subreddit. I will list these below.

Note the user post currently on the 2nd comment is not the scammer. That post was made after the scam.

I had never traded before so I did some google on what would be done, how to not get chargeback scammed on PayPal, and found SteamRep. Initially, the buyer came up clean on SteamRep. My only friend that does light trading briefly looked at his profile for me and said it looked legitimate (He has gotten scammed so that was not a good person to ask) At this point, I had not seen Eternal Mr. Bone's guide and only checked on the SteamRep overview page. We agreed on a price of $2,000 (All amounts are in USD) for the 3 Unopened Crimson Treasures, a Crimson Treasure opened Jug, A Crimson Treasure opened WK, and a Crimson Treasure opened Venge.

We started trying to figure out how to do the trade. The buyer was acting a little worried since I had zero trading history and initially wanted to have him Paypal me first, potentially splitting it into smaller trades and repeating it to reduce the amount I could scam him for.

He suggested a middleman and at first, I wasn't completely sure since I had heard of "Middleman" scams but didn't know how to find a legitimate middleman. After looking for a few minutes, he suggested 3. I will list their steam profiles here:

I had added a few including Eternal Mr. Bones. I checked the ones he sent me on SteamRep and we started to wait for someone to accept. Bacon (As Eternal later informed me) was the legitimate Bacon and it started to lead me awry. St. Gallen didn't seem as legitimate as Bacon but he had an older profile, didn't come up red on SteamRep, and it appeared he was a former PUBG middleman. However, when I checked again later properly after learning to use the Google 64 Option (when it was too late) I saw 2 invalid SteamRep reports, 1 Archived SteamRep Report, and a Reddit thread on him.

SajuukX also appeared to be legitimate as a rocket league trader and I am unsure if he was a second false middleman or not. I am under the impression he was not part of it as he has some high profile guide thing he made for Rocket League.

After 5 minutes-ish, St. Gallen accepted the request. TopDog told him the terms as I also added him. I checked his profile and SteamRep a second time. Again this was only the profile overview on SteamRep I checked, not the ID64 Google. He said he was a former PUBG middleman until they pulled trading from the game. I don't have experience with PUBG and was not sure how to check. I tried clicking random dates from historical dates to see if I could get a Green MM popup. I was not sure of the full legitimacy of SteamRep's rating at this point since I had found it through Google.

At this point, we confirmed the terms of the deal. I initially asked if we could split the trade into 2 trades since it shouldn't change a percentage fee. [%5 of $2,000] is the same as [%5 of $1,000 + %5 of $1,000]. The middleman said the %5 fee would be of the total and applied to each trade. So if we split it into 2 trades, it would end up being %10 overall. I am not sure if this is a red flag.

To avoid paying the 5% we decided to do it in one trade. I sent the trade to him and double checked to make sure that it was only the 6 items, not my full inventory (How my prior friend got scammed). Immediately after sending the middleman the trade I had a sort of moment of clarity realizing "wow you probably just really f✿✿✿ed up." The middleman at this point said he was taking screenshots for proof and sending them to the Buyer.

I then found out the Buyer had been "shopping" my inventory. He asked if I was willing to trade some of my other high-value sets since I had mentioned I likely wasn't going to be playing for a while. Notably, he wanted my Dark Artistry and my Juggernaut Pilgrimage set. I told him I was willing to sell them, but not as part of the current transaction.

Then began a series of "miscommunications" between Me, the Buyer, and the middleman where I would "agree" with the buyer that we could do the other items in another transaction. The Middleman would then send me a message stating that the buyer wanted to cancel. I told him we had an agreement and I would talk again. This is when he informed me that the policy for canceled deal items has a "1 Week Holding Period" as punishment for wasting time. He had been insinuating he was a SteamRep MM but he never directly said he was so I assumed he meant SteamRep policy. Around this time Eternal Mr. Bones accepted my request (had forgotten to cancel it) and confirmed my suspicions of a scam and let me know of the "Bacon Switch".

After a handful of back and forths of the buyer trying to get me to increase the deal to $2800 from the original deal, the MM called the deal off. The buyer sent me one last message stating he only wants my sets now, not the Crimsons.

The Middleman stated the items would be on a 1 Week Hold which I agreed to since I didn't have much other option. He said he would be potentially willing to do the deal the buyer backed out of for slightly less. He asked for the Crimsons, my Dark Artistry, my Juggernaut Pilgrimage sets for $2600 total. I informed him I was interested but I didn't want to do it at once to see if I could get him to PayPal me when I was protected from Chargebacks. I told him I was fully willing to finish the Crimson Deal with him then and there for $1,900. He didn't want to do that so I said that after he returns my items, I would be willing to do it all in one big trade with the huge longshot plan of having him give me my items back in anticipation of a bigger trade. We then planned to meet again in a week.

The next morning he messaged me again and stated that he had sent my items to the "head MM" who had informed him that the holding period was a month, not a week. After I refused to do the second half of the trade separately, he said he would unfriend me to create space and that the head MM would add me again in a month. He then unfriended me. The buyer unfriended me at some point last night.

My bad, just wanted to be complete. I'll make it very short.

The trade was for 6 total items. 3 unopened Crimson Treasures and 3 items opened from Crimson Treasures which were the Jug, the Venge, and the WK. This was supposed to be in exchange for $2,000 USD.

St. Gallen was a middleman that the buyer suggested in addition to 1 legitimate middleman and 1 probably legitimate middleman. I was to send him the items, the Buyer would PayPal me payment, and St. Gallen would release the items to the buyer. The buyer tried to increase the deal size by adding additional items after I had sent items to St. Gallen, but before he had paid me. When I refused to add additional items to the deal, he backed out. St. Gallen informed me the punishment for canceling deals was a 1 week holding period on the items. He then offered to continue the Buyer's trade at a slightly smaller price. After I said I was interested, he did the same thing the Buyer did by trying to increase the deal size. I refused, and this morning the items disappeared from his inventory, he told me he had transferred the items to the "head admin" and that the head admin had informed him the holding period was 1 month, not 1 week.
