Invalid Scammed?

I recently been VAC banned (first time) and then MOST of my TF2 items were gone. I've been told by one of my friends (has knowledge of bans) said that if items were to be taken from Valve, their would be a notice or some sort. My friend says that this is really strange for Valve to just take items without a notice or such and has a feeling it was actually a scam. I would like to get some advice about this. Sound like hijack, Valve will not touch your items unless there is some form of ban/restriction imposed, and you would receive a very obvious Steam notice in such a case.
