What happened? Description:

I was sold a copy of Left 4 Dead 2 from Top Bun's backpack/inventory (sic) via GameBanana, and there apparently was never a copy to be sold in the first place. By the time he revealed to me that he never even checked if he even DID own a gift copy of Left 4 Dead 2, he was already well paid. I had to contact staff on GameBanana (The site where currency traded hands) to refund me manually.

GameBanana points can be exchanged for real games, and if this was not caught sooner than just a few days he could have cashed out and ran.​

Part 1: GameBanana
The sell listing page itself (Archive of before takedown) shows that Top Bun indeed was selling Left 4 Dead 2 here for 1,000 points, which is quite a lot of points. You get a base of 1 point per day of each login, and 25 points for each unique mod created. Do the math. That's quite a lot of points.

And, as you can see on my profile's point log, I did indeed order it.

Part 2: Steam

Three days of no response from him later, he finally adds me on Steam. I ask for my copy, and he asks me to wait a couple of minutes. Naturally, over four hours later I get a reply from him.
He says things that confused me due to how he worded his grammars and vice versa, but it hints that he only has it in his Library, signed to his account.

I remind him he did say it was in his inventory/backpack, and he confirms this. He then says that it isn't in his inventory in any form, and offers to buy it for me directly.
Not what I paid for, not what he got paid for.
He then asks how to give it to me if he doesn't even own a tradable copy in his inventory. By this point it seemed clearer to me that I was losing 1,000 points with getting nothing in return, but I wasn't going to instantly jump to conclusions. But, I just plainly ask him if he even knew if he owned what he was selling before he made the listing, and consequentially before I made my purchase.
No. He didn't.

He sold me something he never owned, for currency that can be traded for items of real world value, that never existed.

By now I've contacted GameBanana staff, and my points have been refunded.

But, still no gift copy of L4D2.​
