What happened? Description:

The scammer added me out of the blue, asking for my advice on whether they should choose red or black. I was confused as the time and said red, the scammer then said that they had won $1400 and was instantly greatful for my "efforts". They then offered me $400 worth of coins in the gambling site's currency. I knew this was fishy from the beginning but I went along for the sake of curiosity, being careful of any potential vulnerabilities. Site required me to log in via Steam, okay, not sketchy, he then offers me a code to use "45w5-2ba4-4101". At first I thought they were trying to make a quick buck off me by getting me to use their referral but I thought it was a little odd as the referral system uses direct link clicking rather than codes. I then also noticed that my referral code was not in the same format as the code they had given so I proceeded cautiously and had fentered the code into the website, noticing that the only codes the site accepts were "promo codes". Later I realised that the site only accepts promo codes so it makes me think that the scammer operated the site, why else would they have this promo code and why can't I make my own promo code?

The code worked and I had received a large sum of coins, I of course went straight for the Dragonclaw Hook from DotA 2 (I'm a diehard DotA fan so of course I went for it). Anyway, in addition to the DotA 2 items they had CSGO items and H1Z1 items for offer. When I attempted to withdraw I received the message:
"You must make a deposit of $40.00 to be able to withdraw items. In connection with the new rule from the VALVE 20 July 2016, we were forced to reduce the number of bots and after the exchange system. Your balance of has been frozen until you make a deposit ($0.00 / $40.00)."

The notice is written horribly and it hurts my eyes to read it, basically it is saying I need to deposit $40 in order to receive my item. I instantly knew that it was a scam, the whole scenario was odd and the fact I needed to deposit $40, by order of "the VALVE", made the whole situation even more suspicious.

After knowing they were trying to get $40 out of me I then confronted the scammer. They insisted that I asked people in the chat about the legitimacy of the website (which is most probably his friends or all accounts owned by the same scammer). After the scammer had realised that they aren't getting a dime from me they then deleted me and I then I thought I better report this so others don't fall for this kind of scam.​
