    Scam Report

Report Type: [Item Fraud] Misrepresenting virtual items
Virtual item type involved: [CSGO] Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Items

    Accused profile: 76561198016863831

    Victim profile: 76561198060027975

    What happened? Description:
I saw a post on csgolounge of a dude offering his Factory new M9 Bayonet Tiger Tooth (worth £260) for *"help"*. I immediately knew that this was a scam but wanted to see what would happen if I went through with it. (Unfortunately I didn't screenshot the post but it isn't really necessary to the scam.)

I added the dude and asked him what he needed help with - he told me that he was scammed out of a Dota 2 item and that he wanted me to message the scammer and try to get his item back. He told me that if I gave him his item back, he would give me his M9 Tiger Tooth. Sure enough, the dude actually owned this M9. The *"scammer"* that he linked me to had a 10-year-old steam profile and about 30 dota 2 and csgo items, including a knife in CSGO.

The item that he wanted me to get back was a "Autographed Strap of the Iron Will" - there was only 2 of them on the market and it was worth ***£300***. At this point I was extremely curious how this scam was going to work - the "scammer" actually had a £300 item, and the dude wanting his item back actually had a M9 Tiger Tooth. I continued on and started talking to the scammer.

This is how my conversation started out: http://i.imgur.com/cqXcpGP.png

Almost straight away he admits to stealing the item, which is extremely strange.

Next, I tried to "guilt trip" him into giving it back to see what his response would be: http://i.imgur.com/ssZ9nt4.png

It's obvious that anybody who wasn't a scammer would just tell me to f✿✿✿ off and block me, but the fact that he wasn't offended or angered by this just reaffirmed even more that these guys were working together.

Then I just said f✿✿✿ it and went straight in for an obvious PayPal scam attempt to see what he would do. He then claims that he "knows all scams" and then ***offers me a deal to just straight up trade my £100 knife for his £300 Dota 2 item.*** http://i.imgur.com/Z1hns8m.png

However, he kept insisting that **I** send the trade offer. http://i.imgur.com/aipKIm9.png

I started to actually doubt myself - was this a real trade? He sent me an actual trade offer that worked out - but the fact that he wanted me to send the offer, and that this offer was so good, put me off.

He justified this massive downgrade by saying that he gets a "free item" - my knife. He doesn't lose anything as he stole the Dota 2 item.

I messaged our "scammed" guy and told him that I think this was fishy. He warned me not to fall for a Paypal trade or a fake trade link. http://i.imgur.com/Amzrm7L.png

At this point I messaged my friend who is very experienced at Dota 2 and Dota 2 trading and he explained that this man's item was not worth £300 - **it was worth no more than £0.05.**

    --------------------

    * How does this scam work?

In Dota 2, items can be "chiseled" to contain things like player autographs - adding an autograph to an item makes it unique on the market. Essentially, these guys took a £0.05 skin, gave it an autograph, and realised that there were no listings on the market for this item - so they placed it at £300, making it have a market price of £300 as it was the only thing there.

Luckily my friend told me about this, and saved me from possibly losing £100. And I'm writing this to hopefully stop others from losing money. This could have been written way shorter but whatever.
